Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane agree on controversial Harry Maguire Chelsea moment amid transfer

Harry Maguire has been embroiled in a handful of controversial moments throughout his career, but none more so than what he did against Chelsea two-years ago. The 29-year-old was thought to have kicked out at Michy Batshuayi when the Blues welcomed Manchester United to Stamford Bridge.

Maguire, who has quickly become heavily linked with a move to west London of late, caught the striker in the groin with his boot as he reacted angrily to a shove in the back which saw him tumble to the floor near the home dugout.

As the altercation broke out, many thought that Maguire should have been issued a red card for the alleged violent conduct - two of whom were Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Liverpool defender said: "It’s a red card. The fact that the Chelsea bench get up and because it is an English manager in Lampard and it is an English player in Maguire, maybe they don’t complain as much as they should do against Maguire.

"That has to go to VAR, but with referees and VAR it is all about consistency and that’s the thing that frustrates you. Harry Maguire is a very lucky boy."

The former Manchester United midfielder added: "Very lucky. A lucky boy. I didn’t agree that Son’s was a red card for Tottenham but it went to VAR and got given and with Maguire, maybe it is his personality because he is normally a calm guy that it isn’t given, but he definitely kicks out.

"It’s a red card. Maguire’s personality has probably helped him. Is he a nasty player? Probably not. The argument is all about consistency. If Son was sent off then so should Maguire."

Anthony Taylor's decision to not send Maguire off left Chelsea fans furious at the decision. While time has passed since, Blues fans often look back on the infamous moment in despair.

According to the Daily Mail, the west Londoners have made a shock enquiry about the England international's availability amid growing doubt over his future at Old Trafford. It's said that Chelsea have raised the possibility of signing Maguire to answer enquiries made by the Red Devils for Christian Pulisic.

Interest in the United captain follows stagnated progress in the race to sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester City. The 21-year-old defender has too been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea and football.london understand that the Frenchman feels like the Foxes are trying to price him out of a move by requesting a world-record fee for his services.

It's believed that Fofana has already agreed personal terms over a move to west London, but the Blues have seen two offers – with the highest being around £70million – turned down by Brendan Rodgers' side. Chelsea are expected to submit a third bid in the region of £80million and have growing confidence that it will be accepted by their Premier League rivals.

Now, this is where Maguire has emerged as an alternative option in the event that Fofana - the primary target - doesn't pen a deal at Stamford Bridge...
