Jamie Carragher and Kenny Dalglish have been amongst the former Liverpool players to pay tribute to the Reds' late chairman and owner David Moores who died on Friday, aged 76.
Moores enjoyed a 16-year term as the Reds' chairman from 1991 to 2007 before he sold the club to American duo George Gillett and Tom Hicks due to the ever-increasing financial demands of the English game. During his time as owner Moores oversaw the club's entry into the Premier League in 1992 and their fifth Champions League triumph in 2005.
Carragher, who was part of the Reds' squad that enjoyed great success under the ownership of Moores - which included a cup treble in 2001 - paid tribute to the Liverpudlian soon after his passing had been made public on Friday.
"RIP Mr Chairman. When I think of the good times I had at @LFC David Moores was at the heart of it. He will be sorely missed. Thank you for what you did for me & the club."
Legendary forward Dalglish, who enjoyed two spells as manager at Anfield, was also quick to express his sadness at Moores' passing
"Marina & I are both very saddened by the passing of David Moores," wrote the Scot on Twitter. "He was a loyal Liverpool fan whose dream came true when he was appointed Chairman, & he did a tremendous amount to help the Club. Our condolences go to his family. He’ll be greatly missed by all who knew him. RIP"
Michael Owen added: "Heartbreaking. RIP Chairman. I know for a fact that all the lads thought the world of you"
Meanwhile, former defender Mark Lawrenson tweeted: Sad news about David Moores..Massive Liverpool fan-His contribution to LFC is understated….We shall miss him…RIP…"
Moores' death, on Friday morning, came just a few weeks after his wife of 39 years, Marge, passed away.
A statement from Liverpool Football Club, on Friday afternoon, read: "Moores served as chairman for 16 years from 1991 and became honorary life president after selling his majority stake in the club in 2007.
"While his uncle Sir John Moores - founder of the Littlewoods retail empire - twice served as chairman of Everton FC in the 1960s and ’70s, David was an ardent Liverpudlian.
"The Moores family held a majority stake in Liverpool FC for more than half a century and David took over at the club he loved in September 1991.
"Alongside trusted chief executive Rick Parry, he presided over Liverpool’s entry into the newly founded Premier League in 1992 and oversaw the managerial appointments of Roy Evans, Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez during his time at Anfield.
"David - who habitually shunned publicity, preferring instead to operate in the background - saw the Reds win 10 major honours throughout his 16-year tenure, including, of course, the Champions League in 2005.
"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with David’s family and friends at this difficult time."
