Liverpool FC hero Jamie Carragher has taken aim at Manchester United for their spending while reflecting on a surprise defeat for his former team against Brentford.
Goals from Ibrahima Konate (OG), Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo did the damage as Liverpool lost ground in the battle for Champions League qualification. As things stand, the Reds are four points behind United - who have their game in hand to come against Bournemouth.
It means that Liverpool could soon be seven points shy of their rivals. Carragher shared his thoughts on the situation while on punditry duty for Sky Sports - with Gary Neville and Micah Richards also on the panel - but could not turn down the opportunity to criticise United despite their upturn since Erik ten Hag took over.

Reflecting on the Liverpool side, Carragher said: "When you look at the age profile of a lot of the players within the squad, they've got a lot of players in their 30s, or coming into their 30s, who've been great for the club. But that is one of the reasons why the ownership is up for sale, or they're looking for investment, because Liverpool are going to need to go big in the summer."
Carragher added: "You look at what Chelsea and Manchester United spent in the summer and they're still not close to winning the title, so it shows you the kind of funds that you need to compete at the top of the league. Liverpool have year-in, year-out sold someone, bought someone.
"It's a case now where Liverpool need to spend about £200million. I'm not saying that's the secret to success - and there's lots of teams who have shown it doesn't necessarily work - but Liverpool need to sign maybe three midfield players, I would say."
Aside from bringing in Christian Eriksen on a free transfer this summer, United signed another four players in Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony for a combined £225million. After 16 games they are sitting fourth in the standings and are only four points behind second-placed Manchester City.
