It looks like Insidious and The Conjuring creator James Wan is taking a break from the horror genre as the director is set to remake a hit Korean action movie.
Wan will direct a new English-language take on The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount under his Blumhouse-owned production company Atomic Monster, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller will also be producing the film through Balboa Productions.
No plot details of the remake have been released, but the 2019 Korean-language movie follows a crime boss who forms an unlikely partnership with a detective in order to take down a serial killer who attacked him. The film stars Train to Busan's Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) as the gangster, Kim Mu-yeol as the officer, and Kim Sung-kyu as the serial killer. The movie stands at a near perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Paramount picked up the rights to the movie back in June 2022, with A Knight’s Tale's Brian Helgeland writing the first draft. The screenplay is written by Shay Hatten, best known for multiple John Wick movies and Netflix's Rebel Moon franchise.
The new movie will mark Wan's first time back in the director's chair since the 2023 sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
However, Wan will certainly have his hands full as the horror head has also made it clear that he wants to direct the next Saw movie. The franchise recently fell back into his hands after Blumhouse acquired half the rights to Saw in 2025. He and Leigh Whannell created the torture franchise in 2004.
