James Vowles explains why he chose Williams over three other F1 team offers

James Vowles has revealed why he chose to sign with Williams as team principal over other opportunities.

The Briton joined Williams as team principal in 2023 after serving as chief strategist of Brawn GP in 2009 and remaining with the team when it was bought by Mercedes. He was promoted from chief strategist to motorsport strategy director in 2019 and was seen as a potential successor to team chief Toto Wolff.

Having realised that, in order to progress at Mercedes, he would need Wolff to leave his role, Vowles decided to look for opportunities elsewhere.

"At the end of '22 there really was not just Williams, there were four different opportunities on the table," Vowles explained during an interview with Frankie Langan.

Explaining why he chose to take the opportunity at the Grove outfit, he continued: "It was the one that resonated with me the most. I mean, to the extent where after the meeting with Williams, I signed the contract in seven days, which is, in any circumstance, really quick, it was just a gelling.

"It's such a legendary brand. When I was a kid that was a team that I followed. I just feel really connected to it. I love the independence. I love what it stands for.

"I love the fact it's got as many championships as Mercedes. And I love the fact that the investment behind it is serious and genuine. And I think for me, if there was one opportunity in my life, I think that would be it, to bring a team like that back to the front with the right investment.

"So the buildup to it was one phone call. After that phone call, within days we were sat with about eight of us total in the room. Contract seven days later. That's it. The rest is history."
