James Tavernier has been surprisingly substituted at half-time during Rangers' return to the Champions League group stages against Ajax.
The Light Blues found themselves 3-0 down inside 33 sobering minutes in Amsterdam against the champions of Holland. Edson Alvarez set the Eredivisie kings on their way before two brutal goals really left Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men reeling.
First it was Steven Berghuis to hit the net with the help of a James Sand deflection and Mohammed Kudus left Tavernier chasing shadows to make it three. In a surprising move though, academy centre-back Leon King was brought on to the right-hand-side of the defence in place of the Rangers captain, who has been a key player on domestic and European fronts for both former manager Steven Gerrard and Bronckhorst. There were rumours of an injury last week ahead of the Celtic match but those were played down and he featured for 90 minutes.
