James Tavernier in battle with Celtic duo and Craig Gordon for prestigious SFWA Player of the Year prize

Callum McGregor and Cameron Carter-Vickers have been nominated for the Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year award along with James Tavernier and Craig Gordon.

The Celtic duo have been pivotal in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge and are on the four-man shortlist for the prestigious award.

But they face competition from Rangers captain Tavernier and veteran Hearts keeper Gordon for the SFWA award.

Steven Davis picked up the prestigious award last season - the first Rangers player to win it since David Weir a decade earlier.

Tavernier was omitted from the PFA Scotland shortlist along with Carter-Vickers which raised eyebrows as Tom Rogic was nominated from the Parkhead side alongside captain McGregor and Hearts keeper Gordon.

But the full back, who is still in with a chance of leading his side to the Europa League final, could pick up the Writers’ award.

The winner will be announced next week before collecting their award at a dinner in Glasgow on Sunday, May 8.
