James Tavernier breaks silence over Rangers fan confrontation as he insists: 'I am there to listen'

James Tavernier has broken his silence on the confrontation with the Rangers support at McDiarmid Park and responded: "I am there to listen."

The Light Blues skipper was caught on film as angry supporters expressed their views following the defeat to St Johnstone in Perth on Sunday. It's a result that now leaves Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men trailing Celtic at the top of the Premiership by seven points with just 13 games played in the season to date.

The pressure is mounting on the Dutchman and his side with Hearts arriving at Ibrox tomorrow night before a weekend trip to St Mirren ahead of the World Cup break. The skipper knows they need to deliver performances and results to match with a return to winning ways the big priority. Speaking to the media, he said: "It's understandable to hear the thoughts of the fans after a poor result. I am the captain and I am there to listen to the fans. We need to improve and perform.

"We need to get back to winning ways, football can change very quickly with some positive results. We never want to lose, we have to work really hard and deliver performances that we know we are capable of.

"In the game at the weekend, we need to be more clinical in front of goal when you look at all the chances we have created.

"I have full belief in this team, it's no good saying this and we need to apply it and deliver on the pitch.

"There is still a lot of games to go, it would be criminal for us as a team to think it is all over.

"We know we will improve and after the break will have fresh bodies return from injury. It is down to us as a team to improve the finer details and finish teams off.

"It is down to us to put in the performances we need and to win games. We have a game tomorrow and I know the squad are ready to go and leave everything on the pitch.

"Playing for Rangers you will get criticised but you have to take it in your stride, improve & continue to be brave on the ball.

"I can use my experiences to speak to the boys. It's down to us to get the fans behind us tomorrow.

"As a minimum, we have to be applying ourselves and working hard and the fans will be with us."
