James Milner signs new Liverpool contract as Jurgen Klopp wish granted

James Milner has signed a new one-year contract at Liverpool, it has been confirmed.

The ECHO understands the 36-year-old has taken a significant pay cut to remain at Anfield, having also turned down offers from the Premier League and abroad in the process.

Jurgen Klopp was the catalyst behind this deal being reached and is believed to be thrilled Milner has extended his stay at the club.

Speaking back in February, the Liverpool boss said: “The level [Milner] is at, physically, technically and in terms of personal desire and hunger for more, means he should play on for as long as that lasts. I hope it will be here and that is what I have told those at the club who take on these tasks."

The three-time Premier League winner took the decision to wait until the end of the season before putting pen to paper, giving him enough time to weigh up his options.

Arriving on Merseyside in the summer of 2015 from Manchester City, Milner has developed into a vital member of the squad and epitomises the club culture of the collective carrying greater importance than any one individual.

The veteran midfielder spent a season at left-back during the 2016/17 campaign and has been called upon on countless occasions over his seven-year spell.

Milner is currently the second longest-serving player in the squad, behind captain Jordan Henderson, and will be the only remaining name from Klopp's first Liverpool starting-eleven still at the club once Divock Origi departs at the end of this month.
