James McClean's wife Erin shares vile abuse after he stood apart during Queen commemoration

Any reasonable person's reaction to James McClean's respectful approach to the minute's silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II would surely have been that he conducted himself in a dignified way while staying true to himself and his background.

However, sadly there are plenty of unreasonable people out there who viewed him standing apart from his teammates as a huge insult to the British monarch.

This predictably led to him and his wife Erin being subjected to some awful messages on social media which she has now shared.

In one instance, they are told: "Please leave the UK, you're not welcome here."

While another person went much further as they commented: "James McClean should be in a box."

James and Erin have had to grow used to such nasty trolling over the years particularly in the run-up to Remembrance Day when the annual poppy debate crops up with all of the divisive offshoots that come with it.

Creggan native James even wore the black armband in tribute to Queen Elizabeth but that still wasn't enough for many in attendance at Huddersfield as they played host to McClean's Wigan Athletic.

He was heavily booed at every touch of the ball throughout the match but did get to silence the ignorant loudmouths in the 82nd minute when he whipped in a low cross that found its way through to Callum Lang who managed to engineer himself a bit of space before firing a low shot past the keeper in what proved to be the winner as The Latics secured a 2-1 victory.

In a nice touch by the travelling support, they actually sang his name at full-time while the players went over to applaud them.

In the days leading up to football's resumption in England, McClean's name had been bandied about in debates over whether players should be compelled to participate in pre-match ceremonies honouring the royal.

He has become the poster boy for such discussions because he has been brave enough to publicly defy convention even though it has brought about torrents of abuse towards him and his young family.

On this occasion, he was clearly irked by hearing that his name was being mentioned in such public debates as he put up an Instagram post where he name-checked prominent football journalist Miguel Delaney (even though Delaney had defended his right to opt out of such memorials).

He wrote: "Unless you are a nationalist that was born and raised in Derry or anywhere else in the north of Ireland then don't assume or speak on our behalf unless you can relate ie. Miguel Delaney."
