James McClean has lashed out at his former club Sunderland and the English FA after he says he was subjected once again to sectarian abuse at the weekend.
McClean posted a clip on social media in which fans can be heard apparently singing sectarian songs during the visit to the Stadium of Light of McClean’s current side Wigan.
It comes in a week when the Irish women’s team has been criticised for their singing of a Wolfe Tones song in the aftermath of their World Cup play-off win in Scotland.
McClean wrote in his post that his seven-year-old son regularly asks his mum why opposition fans aim abuse at the Ireland winger.
He added: “Considering every single year we have an FA representative come into each club to discuss the same old crap they spew to us about discrimination, every single year I challenge them on the abuse, every single year they do nothing
. “This clip is one of yesterday, which can be heard clearly of one particular chant, as well as other chants of ‘f**k the pope and IRA, being sung... as well as numerous individual chants of ‘fenian b*****d, fenian c**t, you dirty Irish c**t’ (while displaying a tribute before the game honouring Niall Quinn who is the same nationality as myself).”
McClean continued: “I should not have to report every single incident when clearly they can all hear what I hear and they should be doing their job by taking action. “I would be lying if I was to say I expect anything to be done about this by the FA, EFL (history shows this), but here is ANOTHER CHANCE…
McClean added that he did not expect Sunderland to address the issue either.
