James McAvoy has revealed he gets stick during visits to Scotland for sounding English.
The 42-year-old actor appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote Cyrano de Bergerac, which is now performing at Brooklyn Academy of Music for the next eight weeks.
The X-Men actor paid a visit to his hometown last month and performed the show at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal for a week-long stint.
But he admitted that when he does return to Glasgow, locals think he's gone "well English".
McAvoy, who was brought up in the Drumchapel area of the city, has lived between London and America for the last 20 years - and he thinks his accent reflects that.
During an interview with Stephen Colbert, the two discussed McAvoy's strong Glasgow accent, which the host "didn't realise" he had before they first met.
He said: "I think the first time I interviewed you I didn't realise you had such a pronounced Scottish accent.
"I had only seen you play either American or British people.
"When you go home, do they say you've changed? That accent, you've lost your accent?
"Because to me, it's almost like a speech impediment."
James quips: "This noise that's coming out of my mouth that you don't understand very well.
"This is seen in Glasgow as an aberration, a capitulation, a crossing of a line which is that I've changed.
"I've gone well English," the Split actor jokes.
Despite getting some stick for his change in accent, McAvoy did admit he got a warm welcome from the Scottish crowds during his performance.
He said: “The crowd in Scotland were louder and definitely more up for it and boisterous.
“The crowds in London were loving it and they were totally getting it but we were getting a lot more laughs in different places and there was just weird stuff as well.
“That wasn’t why we were there but there was a bit of an outpouring of appreciation and love just for being somebody from Glasgow who has done well.”
During his stint in Glasgow, the Hollywood actor was spotted dining at a popular Glasgow restaurant before his opening night performance.
Following a sold-out West End season in 2019, McAvoy is reprising his role in the Jamie Lloyd Company’s exciting production of Cyrano De Bergerac.
The show and McAvoy’s performance has won rave reviews from critics and all nine of its performances in Glasgow sold out.
