James Maddison makes Tottenham vow after missing dramatic defeat to Wolves

James Maddison has vowed to come back “better and stronger” as the Tottenham midfielder begins his recovery from an ankle injury.

The England international missed the game as Spurs lost 2-1 at Wolves on Saturday to compound a miserable week for Ange Postecoglou's side.

Despite leading much of the contest through Brennan Johnson’s early strike, Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina scored late goals at Molineux, just six days after the costly 4-1 defeat to rivals Chelsea.

Postecoglou admitted his side were not “positive” or “aggressive” enough after taking the lead.

“We started well but we could have been a bit more positive and be a little bit more aggressive with the ball," he said.

“I've got to temper that with the fact that we've made so many changes and we're not going to get the same type of fluency, especially when particularly three of your back four are virtually starting for the first time.

"We've made a couple of changes as well further up and it's not going to be as fluent but I just felt we could have been more positive, especially in the first half."

Maddison, who has enjoyed an excellent start to life at Spurs following a summer move from Leicester, is expected to be ruled out until the New Year.

The 26-year-old tweeted: “The rollercoaster that is football unfortunately. Will need a period of time away from the pitch to get this one right.

“See you in the new year Spurs fans, I’ll be back better & stronger for sure, promise you that.”

Key defender Micky van de Ven is facing a similar time on the sidelines after injuring his hamstring on Monday, while Richarlison has recently undergone groin surgery.
