James Maddison would prove to be a 'huge success' at Newcastle United - but the Magpies have been warned they will need to pay far more than their opening bid of £40 million. That is the view of talkSPORT duo Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist, who both gave their verdict on the 'fantastic' Leicester City star.
Eddie Howe has so far been frustrated in his efforts to bring in attacking reinforcements this summer. Newcastle have landed top defensive target Sven Botman, while also agreeing permanent deals for Nick Pope and Matt Targett.
However, the Magpies again missed out on French wonderkid Hugo Ekitike despite agreeing a deal with Reims for a second successive transfer window. The teenage forward opted to join Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on an initial season-long loan deal.

A new striker and a right winger remain on Howe's shopping list, with a host of stars in the Premier League and across Europe linked. Maddison became the latest name to emerge, with Leicester turning down an initial offer of £40m at the weekend.
The one-cap England international enjoyed a stellar season last term despite the Foxes' struggles, and has two years left on his current deal at the King Power Stadium. Brendan Rodgers claimed Newcastle's bid 'might just cover three-quarters of his left leg', while adding he is keen to keep the 25-year-old at the club.
Maddison's valuation was discussed on talkSPORT's Breakfast show on Monday morning, and both Brazil and McCoist were adamant the former Norwich City star would thrive on Tyneside. Brazil said: “He would be a good signing, don’t worry about that. He’s a top player.
“He seems to be overlooked in the England set-up, but when he’s on his game his assists are fantastic and he scores goals. Without a doubt he’d be a huge success at Newcastle.”
McCoist shared the same view, but insisted the Magpies' opening bid was nowhere 'near enough' to tempt Leicester to cash in. Recent reports indicate the Foxes will hold out for £60m, as Newcastle mull over whether to return with a second offer.
McCoist said: “I couldn’t agree more. I like him. He’s a player who I really like, but I also think that Brendan Rodgers is absolutely spot on when he suggests that £40million isn’t anywhere near enough. I’ve got to say I agree with him.”
