James Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student from Elmhurst, Illinois, died after accidentally slipping from rocks into the sea while alone in Barcelona, police in Spain have concluded after reviewing new CCTV footage released this week.
Gracey had been reported missing earlier in the week while on a spring break trip to the city. He disappeared in the early hours after a night out, prompting a search operation involving local police and specialist dive teams. Until Friday, officers had not ruled out foul play, and public speculation had been fuelled by references to 'suspicious' video clips and uncertainty over his final movements. On Friday, police formally announced his death was being treated as accidental.
