James Comer Says He Hopes Ground Troops Won't Be Sent To Iran But 'Sometimes That's Unavoidable'

Republican Rep. James Comer said he hopes the U.S. army won't send ground troops to Iran as part of the ongoing war, but "sometimes that's unavoidable in situations like this."

Speaking on News Nation, Comer said that if they are in fact deployed to Iran, he hopes "they are not there any longer than they were in Venezuela," in reference to the swift operation that captured authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro earlier this year.

President Donald Trump said on Monday the U.S. "probably" doesn't need to send ground troops but refused to rule out the possibility.

Speaking to the New York Post, Trump said he doesn't "have the yips with respect to boots on the ground." "Every president says, 'There will be no boots on the ground.' I don't say it," he added.

Trump noted that the country "probably" won't need to send ground troops into the country, but he is open to it should it become "necessary."

In contrast, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal said on Tuesday that he is "more fearful than ever" that ground troops could be deployed to the country.

Speaking after a closed-door briefing with senior Trump administration officials, Blumenthal said that "troops from the United States may be necessary to accomplish objectives that the administration seems to have."

He went on to say that he left the briefing with more questions than answers, especially about the administration's end goal for the war.

"I also am no more clear on what the priorities are going to be of the administration going forward, whether it is destroying the nuclear capacity of Iran or simply the missiles or regime change or stopping terrorist activities," he noted.

Fellow Democratic Sen. Elizabeth said in a video published on social media that the situation is "so much worse than you thought."

"The Trump administration has no plan in Iran. This illegal war is based on lies, and it was launched without any imminent threat to our nation," Warren said, claiming that the president has not "given a single clear reason for this war."
