Jameela Jamil vows to quit Twitter as Elon Musk buys social media platform

Actress and presenter Jameela Jamil has vowed to leave Twitter after it was announced that the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk would be snapping up the social media platform for $44billion (£34.5bn). On her Twitter page, the 36-year-old posted pictures of herself with Barold her dog and said she'd like it to be her "last tweet".

Following the announcement on Monday that Twitter will soon be owned by the richest man in the world, Musk posted: "I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means".

However, The Good Place actress made the decision to leave the social media platform tweeting: "Ah he got twitter. I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet. Just really *any* excuse to show pics of Barold." Her post continued: "I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck".

Earlier in the day, Jameela had joked in a Twitter post that she would leave the platform if Musk purchased the social networking service. "One good thing about Elon buying Twitter is that I will *FINALLY* leave and stop being a complete menace to society on here. So it’s win win for you all really".

In a statement announcing the deal, the 50-year-old investor and entrepreneur said: "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated. I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it."
