Presenter Jameela Jamil has waded into the Oscar's night furore which saw Will Smith slap presenter Chris Rock after he made a derogatory joke about his wife's shaved head.
Taking to Instagram, Jameela spoke out about exaggerated reporting of the events and offered up a thought-provoking discussion on the treatment of black women.
The former T4 presenter also said that while she didn't condone violence, maintained that Will hit Chris 'softly' for making a dig at his wife Jada Pinkett Smith in front of a global audience.
Hollywood A-listers and fans were left gobsmacked as Smith, 53, marched on stage and slapped Rock, 57, in the mouth following a shock joke about his wife Jada's hair loss, which she previously shared was due to alopecia.
Sharing her take, Jameela posted: "Will Smith said 'Not Today.' A man big enough to absolutely floor him, slapped him softly enough that Chris barely moved, because he made fun of his wife's alopecia on a world stage.
''Don't say protect black women for two years and then only condemn Will here. Come on..."
She also shared a black and white shot of Will Smith with the Malcom X quote: "The most disrespected women in America is the black women.
The most unprotected person in America is the black women. The most neglected person in America is the black women."
Jameela also added a lengthy post and spoke out against inaccurate reporting of the ordeal as she posted a string of probing questions.
She posted: "Multiple things can be true at the same time.
"Is slapping wrong? Yes.'
''Is mocking health/disability wrong? Yes'
''Is disrespecting a Black woman about her hair in a country where Black women’s hair has been politicized, and the source of ridicule for hundreds of years wrong, yes.''
''But the way the discourse is only around the slap, and how many people have jumped to hyperbolize it?
"Huge publications calling it a punch when it absolutely wasn’t. Famous people exclaiming “it could have killed him!” When it was a light slap… all plays into the exaggeration of Black men’s danger and violence in America.
"If you’re *only* talking about the slap online… it’s a bit yikes to me."
Jameela, who fronts her own podcast promoting inclusivity, went on to address the wider issues around the treatment of black women being publicly ridiculed and societies apparent acceptance of it, which she says has to stop."
''Chris punched down. Will slapped across. Physical behaviour is not the only thing to be examined here. The world politely laughing at a woman who has lost her hair, being ridiculed on a world stage… is more damaging than you think. To every person with cancer, or alopecia, auto immune condition that impacts their appearance etc watching.
''Tonight shouldn’t be the start of hitting people over their jokes, but it should be the end of making fun of people’s health issues."
She signed off the post with a personal side note, adding: "Anyway, above all, I hope Jada is having a nice evening. She looked Fucking beautiful."
