JAIPUR: There has been a continuous rise in the prices of vegetables due a rise in fuel prices and abrupt weather changes. Price of lemon has touched Rs 200 per kg and prices of every other vegetable is not less than Rs 40 per kg.
Traders at the Muhana Mandi said the surge in the prices of vegetables will continue for the coming days as local harvest of the vegetables have also exhausted.
TOI on Thursday spoke to the wholesale traders at the Muhana Mandi and also to the retailers to know the reason why the prices of vegetables are going up.
“Due to the abrupt weather conditions the crop of green chilly have been damaged which is the reason why green chilly is been sold in Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg. Its supply has been affected badly at the Muhana Mandi. Earlier we were getting more than 100 tons of green chilly everyday which has now been curtailed to 60 tons per day,” said Abdul Sagar a wholesale trader of vegetables at the Muhana Mandi said.
Likewise, for the past couple of days the prices of vegetables is not less than Rs 40 per kg.
“Bottle gourd which was sold in Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg in the month of February is now been sold in Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg. Likewise, there has been rise in the prices of lemon which is now been available in Rs 200 per kg. For the first time in past eight years the prices of lemon is Rs 200 per kg,” said Navratan Saini, a wholesale dealer of vegetables at Sodala.
Likewise, green peas which was earlier available in Rs 20 per kg is now available in Rs 40 per kg.
“The increase in the prices will continue till mid April. Thereafter, vegetables from the local farms will start arriving and the prices would come down. Also, if the harvest of lemon expected next month would be good from the local prices, its prices will come down,” said Saini.
