JAIPUR: Nearly a dozen Muslim girl students of a private college in Chaksu town of Jaipur on Friday protested after they were barred from entering the institute wearing burqas.
Local police quickly arrived at Kasturi Devi (KD) College to resolve the issue.
In a video of the incident, students and relatives are seen protesting against the college administration and said girls had been wearing the burqa for three years, but why is the college administration is stopping them from entering the college now.
"Some girls had been attending classes in burqas for the past few days. We did not say anything, but other students also followed suit and stopped wearing uniforms. They said that if we could allow some to come without uniforms, then why should other students be forced to wear it. Because of this, we allowed nearly 60 students to enter college without uniforms a few days ago," college's assistant director Sumit Sharma told TOI, adding that the college is located in a rural area and uniform is important to identify if some outsider had entered to create mischief.
"Some people peddled misinformation that we opposed to wearing of the hijab, which is completely untrue. We allow hijabs and some students do wear it," he said.
According to Chaksu police's detailed report, the incident took place at 10.30 am when about 12 students, clad in burqas came to attend classes. The college administration cited the dress code violations and stopped them from entering the premises.
As per the report, the girl called up their parents and they arrived at the college a few moments later. The parents and college administration had a heated argument over the issue. The college administration told students and their parents that students are allowed to wear any decent dressing on "dress off day," which happens to be on Thursday, but the college uniform is mandatory for all other days of the week.
DCP (South) Mridul Kachawa said the situation is peaceful and no untoward incident took place.
