The Jacksonville Jaguars spent Sunday meeting with free agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Clowney, 30, was once the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft and spent the first five seasons of his career with the Houston Texans. He recorded 29 sacks with the team and earned three trips to the Pro Bowl before he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks just prior to the start of the 2019 season.
He later spent one season with the Tennessee Titans and two with the Cleveland Browns.
Jacksonville has shied away from signing free agents this offseason, opting instead to bring back almost all of the roster that won the AFC South title a year ago. While the Jaguars made 13 picks in the 2023 NFL draft, they waited until the fifth round to address arguably their biggest need: an anemic pass rush.
Hopes are high that 2022 No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker will blossom quickly and former top 10 draft pick Josh Allen will re-emerge as a premier pass rusher, but depth behind that duo is thin. A year ago, the Jaguars finished 26th in the NFL in sacks and the team allowed Arden Key — who was third on the team in sacks — to join the Titans in free agency.
While Clowney hasn’t been a Pro Bowler in several years, he still represents a significant upgrade from K’Lavon Chaisson, who currently sits third on the depth chart among pass rushers.
Earlier this week, Clowney reportedly met with the Baltimore Ravens.
