A key worker at a care home who taught a resident who had a fear of water how to swim is the latest recipient of the Wishaw Press’ Say it with Flowers Award.
Sharon Hynds, who is the activity coordinator at Beechwood Care Home in the town’s Bridge Street was nominated by the centre’s manager.
“Sharon goes above and beyond in her role to ensure the residents live fulfilled lives,” said Cathy Togneri.
“She taught one of our younger adults, Jackie Duffy, to conquer her fear of water by teaching her to swim, a skill she never thought she would achieve.
“Jackie was terrified at first but Sharon went with her down to Wishaw Sports Centre for one-to-one sessions for about four-and-a-half months. It’s a reall life-skill Jackie’s learnt and now she wants to go all the time.
“They have a sauna afterwards and make a wee day out of it.”
Sharon has also been responsible for developing a wide range of activities to improve the lives of the residents who live at Beechwood, including arts and crafts session, gardening, and woodcraft groups. The residents enjoy the activities immensely.
“She’s always up for trying new things with the residents and has them at Abbamania in Motherwell Concert Hall last weekend,” Cathy added.
“We thought the Say it with Flowers Award would be a great way to say thank you to Sharon from the residents in the Sefton Unit at Beechwood Care Home.”
When we heard about Sharon’s patience and compassion for the residents at Beechwood we were delighted to present her with this beautiful floral arrangement from our friends at Pixies Petals in Newmains.
