Jack Wilshere drops hint of return to football with Arsenal training Instagram post

Jack Wilshere’s future remains uncertain but he has once again got Arsenal supporters talking with another cryptic social media post.

The former England international has been without a club since leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season and has admitted he has contemplated retirement.

Since October however, Wilshere has been given a new lease of life, returning to Arsenal to train with Mikel Arteta’s youthful squad.

Arteta welcomed Wilshere back to London Colney in October of last year, with the plan of him regaining fitness and working towards his coaching badges.

The 30-year-old last played for Arsenal in 2018, but with the Gunners on the lookout for midfield reinforcements, the idea of a fairytale comeback continues.

Arsenal have already allowed Ainsley Maitland-Niles to leave the club on loan, whilst Martin Odegaard has been out with Covid and Granit Xhaka is suspended following yet another red card.

The Gunners take on Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi final on Wednesday and Wilshere sparked speculation he could be involved after a post of him training with two hourglass emojis.

Sir Mo Farah swiftly commented on the status: “Come back Jack please,” while another Arsenal fan replied: “Those emojis...don’t tease us.”

Plenty of other users predicted he could be back involved in the Gunners squad sooner rather than later, but that would signal a huge U-turn from Arteta.

The Spaniard, who played alongside Wilshere during his playing days at the Emirates, recently ruled out the possibility of him officially returning to his boyhood club.

"I was very clear with the situation with Jack and the role that he was going to have being around here and we continue the same way,” he explained earlier this month.

"First of all it’s great to have him around because he adds this special feeling to the club,” Arteta added.

"His talent is unquestionable, I think you’ve heard some players say he’s the best in training. It’s up to him to take the next step in his career and we’re here to support that.”

Wilshere has been linked with a host of clubs both in England and abroad with the midfielder open to playing in a new country.

“I’d like to go abroad actually. Obviously I would like to play in the Premier League as well,” he said last year. “But I would also like to play abroad.”

He previously suggested that his stint training with Arsenal would conclude at the end of January, by which time he will have hoped to secure his future for the second half of the campaign.
