Jack Wighton has shared on social media some of the racist abuse he has received after announcing he would be leaving the Canberra Raiders at season's end.
The NRL integrity unit is looking into the messages that South Sydney-bound Wighton shared on his Instagram stories, telling him to "f*** off", calling him a "c***" and a racial slur.
Fellow Indigenous Raiders star Jamal Fogarty shared the images on his Instagram, saying the messenger was "stooping low" and calling them a "little coward".
"We need strong consequences/actions for this disgraceful behaviour and show the country we don't accept racism," Fogarty wrote, tagging the Raiders, NRL and Rugby League Players Association.
"Support your players #saynotoracism."
NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo confirmed the integrity unit was investigating and would take matters further if need be.
"It's absolutely abhorrent that we have people that talk to anyone in that way, whether they are a footballer or a member of the public," Abdo said.
"The integrity unit are investigating and will be cooperating with the relevant authorities to take appropriate action."
