The Cincinnati Bengals already have a couple of punt returners in mind in Trent Taylor and rookie Charlie Jones, but according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com there is a third option that might be used occasionally this season.
Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been taking punt return practice in training camp.
Chase said that he hasn’t had any game time as a punt returner since high school, and sometimes at practice in his early days at LSU.
Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said Chase would be a “once-in-a-blue-moon option,” according to Hobson, and Chase said that he would like to try returning punts.
It would be surprising to see the Bengals using Chase as a punt returner, and it sounds like that isn’t the main plan for special teams as of now. But if he runs out to return a punt at some time this season, don’t be surprised.
