Ivory Coast vs Ghana LIVE: AFCON 2027 qualifier result, latest updates and fan reaction

LIVE: Ivory Coast vs Ghana - (London Standard)

Ivory Coast vs Ghana LIVE

Malick Yalcouye marked his international debut in style as Ivory Coast began their Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with victory over Ghana. The Brighton midfielder, who has already scored against Chelsea and Coventry in the Premier League this season following his summer transfer from Swedish club IFK Gothenburg, had a hand in both goals at the Stade de la Paix on Thursday evening.

Firstly, Yalcouye broke the deadlock shortly before half-time with an unstoppable effort that flew past Lawrence Ati Zigi as the 18-year-old was afforded far too much space - similar to his club team-mates Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas in the win over Arsenal last weekend. Then early in the second half, Yalcouye was brought down in the area by Abdul Fatawu, prompting referee Mustapha Ghorbal to point to the penalty spot.

Franck Kessie, the Cote D’Ivoire captain, stayed calm during a two-minute delay for the Ghana players protesting against the decision and sent Ati Zigi the wrong way to double the home side’s lead and secure all three points. Ivory Coast 0-0 Ghana

20:13 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

11 min: It’s all Ivory Coast at the moment as Yacoulye has a shot from the edge of the box deflected behind for a corner. Once again, Diomande was at the heart of that attack.

Ghana make new Eddie Nketiah approach

19:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah has been approached about potentially switching his international allegiance from England to Ghana.

Standard Sport understands that Ghana have a long-standing interest in former Arsenal forward Nketiah and have made another approach to try and get him to play for the Black Stars.

The 27-year-old is considering his options and has yet to make a final decision on whether to represent the country of his parents’ birth.

Semenyo omission explained

19:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

"Antoine [Semenyo] and the coach [Carlos Queiroz] spoke," Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku has said on Asempa FM.

"He told the coach, 'If you need me, I will come down for the medical team to re-examine me, but the truth is that my leg is swollen, and we need to treat it.'

"As a leader, if you want to know your players, and in this particular case, we know the players and how honest they are when it comes to situations like this, you'd have to ask yourself whether you'd allow Antoine to continue with his recovery and be ready for Man City and for Ghana during the next window, or have Antoine fly down to Ghana to undergo an MRI and then ask him to go back because he can't play, his leg is swollen."

Ivory Coast forward Yan Diomande been nominated for the 2026 Men's Young Talent of the Year award.

Why Kudus is not in the Ghana squad

19:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

"As national team coach, we can't control the decisions of the other coaches. In our observations and conversations, it looked like Kudus was moving in the right direction," Carlos Queiroz said of the Tottenham forward stepping down from international duty.

"I had to make the decision on Wednesday or Thursday with the matches, that I was able to scout and make the right observations but later on other information about the status of the player after he played 70 something minutes, unfortunately the news was that they were not progressing in the direction that we expect.

"In my final conversation with Kudus, we realised that the best decision was to protect his progress and recovery process and keep the hope that in this period with more training and more games in the legs, in the next round, Kudus will be ready to be with us."

Stay tuned...

Potential Ivory Coast debutants

18:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Eight players are in line to win their first senior caps for the Ivory Coast national team.

We could be witnessing the beginning of a new era tonight.

Predicted Ghana XI

18:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Mohammed Kudus' absence is particularly understandable given his recent injury history. The midfielder has only recently returned from a lengthy hamstring problem which kept him out for much of the second half of the 2025-26 season and ultimately ruled him out of the World Cup, and opted to withdraw from international duty.

There is some positive news for the Black Stars, with Alexander Djiku, Nathaniel Adjei, Ibrahim Sulemana, Felix Afena-Gyan and Ibrahim Osman returning to the squad.

Predicted Ghana XI: Asare; Oppong, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Yirenkyi, Sibo, Donkor; Issahaku, Thomas-Asante, Nuamah.

Predicted Ivory Coast XI

18:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Yahia Fofana expected to start in goal, Ousmane Diomande anchoring the defence and Franck Kessie providing experience in midfield.

Yan Diomande is expected to lead the Ivory Coast attack as he looks to rediscover his best form after an indifferent start to life at Real Madrid.

Predicted Ivory Coast XI: Fofana; Doue, Koussounou, Diomande, Konan; Kessie, Sangare, Inao; Pepe, Bonny, Diomande.

When is AFCON 2027?

18:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

The next edition of AFCON takes place in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda at the end of the season, rather than in the middle of the new Premier League campaign which was the case during 2025-26.

A statement reads: “The competition will begin on Saturday, 19 June 2027, with the opening match. The final will be played on Saturday, 17 July 2027.

“These dates give the tournament a clear one-month window and allow CAF, the hosts, teams, broadcasters and supporters to plan well in advance. The exact match schedule, venues and kick-off times will be announced later by CAF.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has described the 2027 tournament as an historic one as AFCON will return to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted the competition in 1976.

As things stand, only the three co-hosts, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, have guaranteed their spots at the tournament as qualification begins this month.

Score prediction

18:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

In his short spell as head coach, Carlos Queiroz has made Ghana a lot more difficult to beat. During the summer, they kept two clean sheets - one against England - and narrowly lost to Colombia in the round of 32.

Problem is, the Black Stars don't score much - netting just twice at the World Cup. The absences of Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus is unlikely to provide any optimism of that changing.

Ivory Coast, on the other hand, are blessed with attacking options and we think their firepower will prove decisive tonight.

Ivory Coast to win, 2-0.

Ghana team news: No Semenyo

Evann Guessand and Omar Diakite are notable omissions from the 25-man Ivory Coast squad.
