Ivana Bacik Labour: Everything you need to know about the Dublin TD from prison threat to political activism

Ivan Bacik looks set to become the new leader of the Labour Party after Alan Kelly resigned late last night.

It looks set to be an unopposed run to the Labour Leadership after Aodhan O'Riordain and Duncan Smith both ruled themselves out of the running, pledging their support for Bacik.

This comes just months after Bacik won a seat in Leinster House after coming out victorious in the Dublin Bay South by-election.

With the Labour Party currently lagging well behind the major parties in the opinion polls, Bacik will certainly have a challenge on her hands if she is to become the new leader.

Where is Ivana Bacik from?

Ivana grew up in the Rathgar/Terenure area but now lives in Portobello with her family.

Her surname is Czech in origin. Bacik's grandfather was imprisoned by the Nazis during WWII. After the war he moved to Ireland with his young family, where they settled in Waterford.

Ivana's maternal side hails from Co Clare.

Where was Ivana educated?

Ivana attended Trinity College Dublin and The London School of Economics where she obtained a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws degree, respectively.

Does she have previous political experience prior to last years by-election?

She does. Bacik has been a Senator in the Seanad since 2007.

She has been politically active since her school days

Ivana was a student activist in years gone by. She was taken to court and threatened with prison due to her providing information on how to access abortion services.

What does she do in her spare time?

Ivana is a keen cyclist and swimmer as well as a climate campaigner.

What policies does she support?

Bacik has actively supported the increase in cycling infrastructure in Dublin Bay South and "increase green spaces for communities and enhance the water quality and recreational value of Dublin Bay."
