Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney was said to be “rude and obstructive” when stopped by police over suspicions that he was driving with dangerously-tinted windows and an illegal personalised number plate on his £160,000 Mercedes.
The 26-year-old Premier League star was accused of “not caring” when he was pulled on April 2 after his green, G-class SUV was spotted on the A4 in Chiswick.
It is said the driver and passenger-side windows of the car were so heavily tinted that just five per cent of natural light was detected inside the vehicle. Bromley magistrates’ court heard that Toney’s personalised number plate bearing his name, IVAN, and his shirt number, 17, broke DVLA rules.
On Thursday the case was listed by a magistrate in a closed-door hearing, and adjourned until December 9 for further information to be provided by the police.
Toney faces charges of using a vehicle in a condition likely to cause danger of injury and driving a vehicle when the registration mark failed to conform with regulations.
In evidence to the court, Pc George Anckorn said: “The driver’s attitude was poor. He was rude and obstructive to police. He did not care.”
The officer claimed Toney’s car was “dangerous due to its excessively tinted front driver and passenger windows”.
At the weekend, it emerged that Toney was under investigation by the Football Association over allegations of historical match betting. Confirming national media reports, Toney said in a statement: “I have been assisting the FA with their inquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.”
It is said the inquiry dates back to his time in the lower leagues before joining Brentford. Toney is not suspected of gambling on his own team to lose or match fixing.
The former Northampton Town, Newcastle and Peterborough striker has scored eight goals this season for Brentford and in September earned a first call-up to the England squad.
Toney has not entered pleas in writing or engaged with the court process. His agent and Brentford FC have been approached for comment.
