Ivan Toney can't resist making Arsenal Premier League title joke after scoring for Brentford

Brentford striker Ivan Toney appears to be part of an ongoing feud with Arsenal. The Bees striker and the Gunners haven't seen eye to eye in recent years and it seems the 27-year-old is keen to heap further misery on the north Londoners.

After scoring his 16th goal of the season to hand Brentford a 2-0 win against Southampton on Wednesday night, Toney just couldn't resit making a joke about Arsenal's Premier League title charge. Although, this time it appears the comments were made in good spirits.

"It's a tough league but hopefully we can catch Arsenal!" Toney said. Of course, Brentford are 25 points behind the Gunners who are on 66 points and battling Manchester City in second.

Thomas Frank laughed when told of Toney’s joke before adding: "He is a fantastic player to work with that optimism and belief transmitting to the team. An unbelievable winning mentality."

What makes Toney's comments somewhat interesting is the history he has with Arsenal. It all started following Brentford's 3-0 win over Mikel Arteta's side last season, with Toney tweeting after the game: "Nice kick about with the boys."

Of course, those associated with the Gunners were unhappy with this comment and the tweet even featured in Arteta's team talk before the club's reverse fixture win against Brentford, as seen in the Amazon Prime Arsenal All or Nothing series.

Arsenal then beat the Bees 3-0 earlier this season and Arteta was asked if his side had a nice kick about with the boys. He replied: "(chuckles) I’m really pleased the way we played. The performance how we controlled certain areas of the game that are very much needed if you want to dominate the game against Brentford and obviously really pleased to win the match and go top if the league into the break."

After the match, defender Gabriel Magalhaes took to Twitter to mock Toney. "Nice kick about with the boys," the Brazilian said, in reference to Toney's past comments.

Toney took issue to this tweet when asked his thoughts after joining up with the England camp in September. "Once was funny, second time was a bit cringey," he said.

"I bit my tongue, I wanted to reply, I wanted to nibble. But fair play to them, they played very well and they’re a different Arsenal side to what we played before. They’re going very well so fair play to them."

So, it's fair to say that Arsenal and Toney have had an eventful couple of years, and it appears that the feud isn't going to stop anytime soon following the striker's latest joke.
