ITV Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fans gobsmacked by Richard Madeley's 'awkward' gaffe

Who Wants to be a Millionaire viewers were gobsmacked by Richard Madeley's blunder.

The veteran broadcaster appeared on tonight's celebrity edition of the popular game show. The 66-year-old was raising money for Cornwall Air Ambulance and St Frances Hospice.

Jeremy Clarkson hosted the show and was baffled as Richard committed a series of gaffes moments into the episode. Richard first walked to sit in Jeremy's seat before he repeatedly referred to the host as his predecessor, Chris Tarrant.

Jeremy joked he wasn't called Chris before he referred to Richard as "Piers". Viewers following the show on Twitter were in hysterics after the gaffe

Richard recovered from the blunder to put in an impressive performance as he earned £125,000.
