ITV Vera viewers identify 'geographical flaw' in drama's latest episode

Vera fan were slightly perplexed while watching the latest episode of the much loved crime drama and it's all down to the use of two very different and very far apart locations in the North East.

Following like seemed an eternity of having to wait for new Vera episodes, DCi Stanhope got back on the case a fortnight ago, returning alongside sidekick Aiden Healy and other colleagues to tackle the two outstanding mysteries from series 11, after fans had been left gutted that the last run was cut off in its prime to make way for The Good Karma Hospital and Trigger Point,.

After tying up the loose ends of one series, it was time for Vera to enter a new era at the weekend when the first episode of series 12 aired on ITV. Called Against The Tide, it tasked Brenda Blethyn's no nonsense alter ego with getting to the bottom of a suspicious death of a local enforcement officer and experienced amateur.

Her investigations led her to a couple who were said to be living in the small Northumberland village of Acklington; but was in fact instantly recognised as Peterlee by those people watching who clocked its much talked about Apollo Pavilion.

A landmark very well known to East Durham locals, who may have grown up knowing its as the Pasmore pavilion, it was front and centre as Vera returned from an an break, as Vera and Aiden walked past it.

There was then further confusion when the character spoken to by Vera told the detective she had been to Morpeth to 'do her shopping.

Given that its a near 80 mile round trip between P:eterlee and Morpeth, that line got quite a reaction on Twitter, with one viewer posting: "Watching #Vera and trying to get my head around a family who live next to the Apollo Pavillon in Peterlee travelling the 36 miles to Morpeth to do their shopping," with another tweeting: "After watching #Vera last night I can't stop thinking about the woman who lived in Peterlee and did her shopping in Morpeth. I think the location scouts do it on purpose."

Recognising its not the first time Vera has taken liberties with a location, a third commented: "#vera has spent 11 years making up town n village names, then tonight we get a treasure trove of real location names only for them to be filmed in entirely different locations. 'Acklington' in Peterlee( Co.Durham!), 'Bedlington' in Amble."
