The 51-year-old was born in Halifax and moved to London for drama school when he was a teenager. Before his major gig on Coronation Street, he appeared in many dramas.
His TV debut was in the series Between the Lines in 1992. He went on to star in Pie in the Sky, The Time of Your Life, Silent Witness, and Serious and Organised, opposite Martin Kemp.
He also starred in Channel 4 drama The Village as Rutter and Manchester drama Shameless - where he played Cameron Donnelly, the father of Maxine Donnelly in the gritty Channel 4 comedy-drama in 2010.
While Joe has played Tim Metcalfe - the biological father of Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) - for nine years, he initially broke onto the cobbles three years earlier. He made his first appearance on the soap in 2010 as D S Carr - the officer who arrested Gail Platt (Helen Worth) on suspicion of the murder of her husband Joe (Reece Dinsdale).
During his time on Corrie, Joe has been fortunate to find love with one of his fellow co-stars, Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin. The loved-up couple are thought to have started their romantic relationship in the summer of 2018.
In June 2021, they posted a selfie together on Instagram in a hot tub which was captioned "Three years". Joe popped the question to the actress and made her his fiancee during lockdown, when the lovebirds were holed up at home together.
Sharing a picture of her emerald ring, Sally said on Instagram in March 2020: "So this happened... #yes". Joe often shares snaps of Sally to his account - joe_duttine_ - with sweet captions.
One international women's day, he uploaded a gorgeous selfie of Sally, and wrote alongside it: "Happy international women’s day.... This lady [love heart emoji]. However despite being together for some time, due to the various lockdowns amid the pandemic, their wedding was postponed.
The lovebirds were set to tie the knot last December, however they chose to put it back a year. They're now set to marry this Christmas at St Philip’s Church in Salford.
“We should have been getting married this December, but we put it to next year because we didn’t know what the score was going to be COVID wise,” Sally told the Mirror last year.
“We thought it was better safe than sorry because I would have hated to have arranged it and then not be able to do it properly.” She added: "I’m obsessed with Christmas, so when Joe said: ‘What’s your favourite time, when would you most like to do it?’ it had to be Christmas.
"We’re going to have the wedding late afternoon so it will be dark and it will be lit by rows of Christmas trees and twinkly lights; I can’t wait."
