ITV This Morning viewers demand apology from Phillip Schofield as 'tone-deaf' Spin to Win returns after backlash

This Morning viewers hit out at ITV again on Tuesday morning after the Spin to Win game returned. The ITV daytime show was bombarded with criticism on Monday after making a 'tone-deaf' change to its popular prize segment.

As Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby returned from their annual summer break, the presenters brought back with them the Spin to Win competition which had been temporarily halted in their absence. The game usually sees a viewer given the chance to win up to £3,000 alongside smaller cash prizes and trips.

But fans of the TV programme who tuned in on Monday were horrified to discover that some of the monetary prizes had been replaced by 'energy bills' - meaning viewers could have their bills paid for by ITV for four months if they land on the prize.

Before spinning the wheel for one of the callers, Phillip asked whether he was concerned with the soaring prices of electricity in the UK. Naturally, the caller admitted that he was dreading the colder months, and shared his relief once the wheel landed on the 'energy bills' option.

The segment quickly sparked backlash as viewers were stunned that being able to pay for your energy bills was now considered a 'prize' with some saying it's like a "nightmare sequence from a dystopian drama" whilst comparing it to Black Mirror.

But despite the controversary, the game returned on Tuesday for a second day with a yet another change to the prizes.

Phil grinned as he addressed the segment that 'everyone's talking about' before announcing: "Our boss is incredibly generous and has decided to increase the money to include ALL of your household bills, so that could mean your mortgage, your petrol or your food."

After the game ended, the 60-year-old presenter then said: "I wonder how much of that they can complain about online".

Viewers quickly took to Twitter to share their disgust at the 'tone-deaf' prizes and also demanded an apology from the show as Phillip Schofield brushed over the controversary.

@DavidMackayy tweeted: "@Schofe and @hollywills, why do you find it so hilarious about dangling the opportunity to pay someone’s bills and not even have the decency to apologise to your viewers."

@DonnaARees wrote: "Badly done Phillip Schofield, graceless, prickly and tone deaf," as @WitchyOfG21 added: "So now spin to win includes ALL household bills dearie me. Just stop it ffs."

@TheDroyver said: "Philip Schofield: Right, everyone talking about it. Let’s play spin to win. *smug grin* No acknowledgement of how out of touch they were. No apology."

@David46544024 tweeted: "@thismorning I'm only watching to see if you apologise for spin the wheel," as @jack_lake wrote: "The sheer amount of deafness between these two is staggering."
