ITV This Morning viewers claim show is 'bonkers' after seeing man with pet 'potato'

This Morning viewers were left gobsmacked after a New Zealand man appeared on the ITV show on Tuesday morning with what appeared to be his pet potato.

Presenters Phillip Schofield and Josie Gibson were also filmed looking particularly shocked as Colin joined them live from New Zealand with his friendly gourd, Dug, a large fruit in the same family as squash and pumpkin.

Colin appeared with Dug as he had thought he had grown the world's largest potato - only to find out it was indeed not a potato, and instead a different type of fruit plant that grows similarly to potatoes.

Speaking on the ITV show, Colin said: " The mysterious part is, how the heck did he get in my garden?"

When asked if he was disappointed with the outcome, Colin replied: “Yes and no, it’s not like we’ve strived to do this, it’s just a happy coincidence that it’s what we found growing, and we didn’t plan to grow this but it’s like the people who found the biggest gold nugget.

"They weren’t gold-miners, just drunks coming home from the pub!”

Viewers flocked to social media to discuss the appearance of Dug and Colin on the show, with one Twitter user saying: "#ThisMorning anyone else just turn their TV on and make a very odd face at the TV? Errrr...."

Another said: "What on earth?! Am I still asleep?! #ThisMorning"

And a third wrote: "This show is bonkers #ThisMorning"

Some viewers were even calling to make Colin a regular on the programme, as his little jokes were a hit with the audience.

One Twitter user said: "Colin for new presenter for This Morning! He is brilliant! #thismorning"

Another wrote: "I love eccentrics like potato man #thismorning"

And one Twitter user commented on the fact that the spud story brought about a positive vibe to the daytime television programme, that has given them a lift from all the more serious topics discussed.

The viewer said: "#ThisMorning has a happy vibe today which is great. Too many doom and gloom segments lately. I love giant 'potato' or whatever it is guy."

ITV's This Morning continues every weekday from 10am onwards on the channel.
