ITV This Morning's Rochelle Humes candidly admits 'deep shame' she felt growing up

Rochelle Humes candidly admitted that she felt a 'deep shame' when growing up during her latest appearance on This Morning. The singer-turned-presenter has been back as the main host of the ITV daytime programme this week alongside Vernon Kay.

As they returned for Thursday's show (September 1), the pair were joined by two familiar faces for the latest 'This Morning's View' segment which sees the four-piece discuss the latest news headlines.

One of the topics they discussed was a new report on who makes up a 'traditional' family in the UK today. According to the report, nearly half of British children now grow up outside the traditional two-parent household.

The findings are from the Independent Family Review by England's Children's Commissioner and it was released ahead of Dame Rachel de Souza's speech in which she was to say that the government should not be "squeamish" to focus on families and put them at the "centre stage of their agenda."

Commenting on the stats, which say 44 per cent of those born at the start of the century didn't live with both biological parents for their entire childhood, Rochelle said: "I remember, so I grew up raised by my mum and my mum only, and when I was younger it was kind of the thing that I was almost a little embarrassed about it."

The 33-year-old continued: "So they'd be like, 'oh who's your dad?' and I'd be like, 'oh he's never here, I don't really know him that much', and it was always something that I felt sort of deep shame about as a child which is an odd thing.

"But now, I'm surprised its only one in four is what they're saying, one in four families, I'm actually surprised at that because I feel it's almost rare to say, 'oh my mum and dad have been married for 30 odd years', that's quite rare now."

Rochelle was raised in Barking, East London, by mum Roz, a former paramedic. Speaking on Stephen Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast, Rochelle said: “It was just me and Mum. She and Dad split when I was tiny, just short of one. And then that was sort of it, really. I had contact with my dad for little bursts of time but it was never anything solid. And then the contact stopped altogether."

She has previously opened up about her relationship with her dad after being brought up single-handedly by her mum. The mum-of-three was a baby when her mum Roz Wiseman and dad Mark Piper split up and says two things helped her come to terms with it – being a parent herself and becoming soulmates with two half-sisters she never knew about.

Rochelle a half-brother and two lookalike half-sisters Lili Piper and Sophie Piper, who appeared on the first ever winter series of Love Island in 2020. But Lili hasn't always been a part of Rochelle's life, as it appears she is her long-lost younger sister.

Having not seen eachother since they were children, the pair were reunited by Love Island 2017 winner Kem Cetinay in 2019. Speaking to Giovanna Fletcher on her Happy Mum Happy Baby Podcast, Rochelle explained: "Two years ago, I was at our management's Christmas party and Love Island's Kem was there.

"He was chatting away and said, 'I got to talk to you... as soon as I became a celeb, I promised my friend Lili that I would talk to you as she's your sister on your dad's side'. I knew of her and met up with her when I was five, but it was so complicated as they were a lot younger and my dad wasn't involved.

"On a drunken night out, Kem asked me if he could give her my number. She WhatsApped me and I didn't reply till the morning. We planned to go out for dinner with my other sister and brother and I made Marvin come with me because I was so scared."
