ITV This Morning fans slam The Speakmans over 'rude' advice to caller who's afraid of flying

This Morning viewers were left seriously unimpressed as The Speakmans returned to the show. Nik and Eva Speakman joined hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in the studio on Monday's edition of the ITV daytime show where they were on hand to help tackle viewers' phobias.

Among those phoning in for the husband and wife duo's help was James who said he has developed a fear of flying and shared the reason why he didn't want to fly in a plane due to a bad experience he previously had.

Despite having worked for cabin crew for 25 years, James explained how a "terrifying" incident five years ago has left him with a fear of flying that he desperately want to overcome.

"I was on a flight and there was an A380 Airbus taking off before us," the This Morning caller explained. "We went to take off on the 747 and they hadn’t left enough time between the take-off so we got caught in the wake of the aircraft. It threw the aircraft over, not totally over but quite a distance and it was terrifying."

He continued: "The whole crew thought they were going to die and ever since then every time I go on an aircraft after that if there was any turbulence I was a bag of nerves. Eventually, I just had to leave because I couldn’t stand it anymore."

James said the upsetting incident has "taken the world away" from him and added: "I tried to go on holiday but I had to get off the aircraft because I was terrified."

Handing over to The Speakmans, Nik said to James: "For 25 years, when did that happen? This happened because it was a new plane and it was a new experience." Eva added: "Can I be a little bit tough with you?" James agreed for Eva to be stern as he wanted all the advice he could get.

"Knowing James, you faced the worst-case scenario and still nothing happened, what right have you got to give an airplane a hard time that it’s ever let you down?" Eva asked. "Next question, when in your lifetime has an airplane let you down?" James replied: "It’s never let me down…"

Eva was then quick to add: "When you were learning to walk, you fell over loads of times. But not once did you go, ‘this isn’t for me mate.’ It was only a one-of. You didn’t die, you were safe and you’ve got more evidence than anyone that those pilots know what they’re doing."

As the call came to an end, Eva admitted that the advice "came from a good place" and that hope she wasn't "mean". And while Holly and Phil assured her otherwise, viewers weren't so happy and took to social media to complain.

Viewers had their say on the advice (ITV)

@freckles_79 tweeted: "Good god… who p****d @thespeakmans off #ThisMorning #TheSpeakmans @thismorning." @sparklisarah sarcastically shared: "#ThisMorning Good advice from the Speakmans today...you didn't die on the plane so get over it..."

@kev_g63 complained: "The Speakmans were a disgrace this morning, people only need a one time incident to develop a phobia , they of all people should know this but basically brushed off every caller and told them to get over it." @georgehancockkx wrote as she watched along: "Oh my god she is so rude!!!! #ThisMorning."

@WorfDelm2016 fumed: "Speakmans should NOT be invited back on after that angry ranty phone in. That was bizarre #thismorning." @shangusxo asked: "Why are the Speakmans SCREAMING at this man. #ThisMorning."
