ITV The Bay: Real life of Marsha Thomason from growing up in Moston to being US TV star

The Bay is back with its third season, following family liaison officer DS Jenn Townsend at the centre of a new case.

Replacing Lisa Armstrong, DS Townsend is thrown in at the deep end when she is called to help with a murder investigation on her first day.

Actress Marsha Thomason stars as the sergeant and it's no mystery as to why; she's no stranger to detective roles.

The star, 46, previously played special agent Nicole Dechamps in NCIS: Los Angeles, among other prestigious TV and film roles.

She might have been born in Moston, Manchester, but Marsha has gone on to become US television royalty.

The performer attended Holy Trinity Primary School in Harpurhey and North Manchester High School for Girls in Moston.

She always had a keen interest in drama and attended the Oldham Television Workshop from the age of 13.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News back in 2004, Marsha admitted she would not be where she is today were it not for the Oldham Theatre Workshop where she first honed her talents.

"I was 12 when I joined and I owe everything to them.

"It was where I got my first break and I just learnt so much there. Acting was just a hobby at first, but when I was 17 I realised it was all I wanted to do.

"Without somewhere like that, how else was a girl from Manchester going to become a Hollywood actress?"

Marsha went on to study English at Manchester Metropolitan University and continued taking part in youth theatre productions before pursuing acting as a career.

She currently resides in LA, having recently returned to England to star in The Bay.

Marsha married lighting technician Craig Sykes in April 2009, tying the knot in Malibu, California.

They went on to welcome a daughter, Tallulah Anaïs, in June 2013.

Marsha has had an impressive career in TV and film - both in the UK and on the other side of the pond in the US.

She is arguably most-recognised for her role in the TV series Lost, where she played Naomi Dorrit.

Marsha appeared in the popular noughties show from season 3 and was a regular until the finale in 2010 - appearing in 12 episodes.

Speaking to Digital Spy back in 2007, she said of Lost: "I loved Lost! I’ve known Dominic Monaghan for years and so I watched the show because he was on it, and I became a huge fan immediately, so I was really excited when I got the part."

But her first taste of TV stardom came in 1997, when Marsha landed the role of Sally in the fifth season of BBC One's Pie in the Sky.

She featured in eight episodes and shortly after went on to appear in three more British drama programmes.

In 1998 she played Shazza Pearce in football drama series Playing the Field, followed by roles in ITV's Where the Heart Is and the first series of BBC Three drama Burn It.

In the US, Marsha starred in the 2003 Disney film The Haunted Mansion opposite Eddie Murphy.

She also starred in the first two seasons of NBC comedy-drama Las Vegas between 2003 and 2005, appearing in 47 episodes.

Further film roles include My Baby's Daddy, Black Knight and Pure.

Her other US TV credits include 2 Broke Girls, NCIS: Los Angeles, Messiah V: The Rapture, Easy Money, Bones, SEAL Team, MacGyver, Magnum PI and White Collar.

All three seasons of The Bay are available to stream now on ITV Hub.
