ITV Soccer Aid: Vicky McClure says she will 'channel inner Brian Clough' to win

Line of Duty star and Nottingham's own Vicky McClure said she is going to channel her 'inner Brian Clough' during Soccer Aid this weekend. Vicky is part of the coaching staff for England at the charity match of celebrities and ex-professional footballers raising money for UNICEF on Sunday (June 12), the match kicking off at 6.30pm at the Olympic Stadium, the home of West Ham.

Co-star Martin Compston is playing for Rest of the World side being Scottish. The duo appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain on Friday (June 10) morning talking about their involvement in the well-watched charity game.

Speaking on the show, Vicky said: "We're looking sharp, we did a bit of training yesterday and I'm trying to channel my inner Brian Clough and say 'if you need a beer, if that will help you play better, then do it, relax, we don't want you injured for Sunday'. That's what I'm bringing to the table and that's going to do us proud."

Both stars were also asked if they would reunite if a new season of the hit BBC show was written. That's after Vicky, Martin and Adrian Dunbar were pictured having a reunion lunch with series writer Jed Mercurio. Although Vicky said there were no plans set in stone for a new season, the cast would reunite if a seventh series was penned. Hosts Ben Shepherd and Kate Garraway asked Martin and Vicky if there was anything in that picture.

Vicky said: "Nothing is planned as of yet, we just went out for a nice meal. We always have a long break in between series. We'd all go back, we all adore working with each other, Jed's writing is phenomenal and the last series was incredible in terms of the response that we got, but it was tough to shoot because of Covid. It would be lovely to go back and not end that way."

Martin said: "We're chuffed people want us to come back and it's been going for 10 years. The fact people still want to see the show is amazing, and, if there's a story to be told, I'm sure Jed would bring us back."
