ITV's Vera star Brenda Blethyn left drenched during filming for series finale as secrets 'exposed'

Brenda Blethyn has revealed she got absolutely 'drenched' during filming for the final episode of Vera's latest run, as viewers are finally set to learn more about her on screen alter-ego's past.

After nearly a year long wait for new Vera episodes, fans of the much loved ITV drama saw their patience rewarded last month when DCI Stanhope and her colleagues returned for a fresh batch of investigations, starting with the remaining episodes of series 11, which went 'missing' as Vera was unexpectedly taken off air near the start of 2022.

After Vital Signs and The Way The Window Blows wrapped up series 1, series 12 kicked off with Against The Tide, before continuing last Sunday with For The Grace of God, which saw the action switch to the centre of Newcastle, as ex Our Girl star Mark Armstrong starred as a former soldier found dead down the Quayside, after his life took a downward spiral.

The penultimate episode of Vera's latest run on ITV will air this Sunday, February 12 and will be followed a week later by the fourth episode of series 12, The Darkest Evening. And it is in the feature length finale that secrets of Vera's past will exposed

It was leading lady Brenda who revealed that viewers will discover things about the no nonsense detective, while also opening up about the extreme weather conditions she and her co-stars faced while filming the episode.

In an interview to promote the new series, BAFTA winner Brenda said: "We have set the TV adaptation of The Darkest Evening in a violent storm and we learn yet more about Vera and her family. A body is found on the outskirts of land owned by some of her distant relatives. At the start of that story, with no signal on her phone, Vera finds herself having to find refuge from the storm to get help having found a baby in an abandoned car.

She added: "And the only place she can go for help is into the Stanhope’s ancestral pile - Brockburn House - where Vera used to go as a child with her dad. That brings back all kinds of memories for her."

And then discussing the hardships during filming, she explained: "It was so cold during filming for The Darkest Evening. I spent a couple of weeks drenched from head to foot. I just hoped I would have shrunk but I didn’t. Some of the rain was artificial and then we had real rain when we didn’t want it. We also had wind machines and all the rest of it."
