ITV's Vera series finale to be 'landmark' episode for much loved drama as fans gutted

Vera will air a landmark episode for its series finale on Sunday night, with fans gutted that the new run of the ITV drama is over already.

Die hard viewers of Vera had to be very patient after it was pulled from schedules at the start of last year, with them knowing that there were still two episodes to come in series 11. Vera fans over in America got to watch them along with the rest of the series on BritBox, but British viewers were made to wait until last month to see Vital Signs and The Way The Wind Blows.

They were swiftly followed a week later by series 12 opener Against The Tide, which saw Paul Kaye appear in his final scenes as popular character Dr Malcolm Donahue. There have been two more parts of series 12 on ITV since then and Vera's latest six episode run will end with series finale The Darkest Evening .

The two hour story will see DCI Stanhope forced to confront her family past after being caught up in a violent storm and finding a baby abandoned in a car. And the woman responsible for the plot, North East author Ann Cleeves, as revealed to fans that Sunday's instalment will be a special one for Vera as it is its 50th episode.

Sharing a teaser for The Darkest Evening on Twitter, Ann wrote: "VERY cool that the 50th episode is the adaptation of The Darkest Evening." Reacting to Ann's post, one of her followers posted: "This was such a great book. Hope the episode does it proud," with a second, echoing those sentiments by writing: "I really enjoyed this book, so I'm looking forward to seeing the TV version."

Sharing their upset about Vera disappearing off screens once again, another fan replied: "Noooooo. That was too fast. But it's cool, I will re-read the books - again and re-watch every episode."
