ITV's Trigger Point just ended with a huge shocking cliffhanger

Trigger Point has been one of ITV's most anticipated new dramas for 2022 and they certainly wanted to shock viewers with the opening episode.

It's no surprise with Line of Duty's Jed Mercurio producing and Vicky McClure heading up the cast, we expected fireworks.

Last warning for spoilers....

Following bomb disposal colleagues Lana Washington (McClure) and Joel Nutkins (Adrian Lester of Hustle and The Day After Tomorrow) as they are called to a block of flats where terrorists terrorise a family and the team are under pressure to discover the what's been rigged with a bomb.

The action saw various tense moments they whisper and creep around potentially fatal explosives and, did anyone else spot this bit, the camera linger just that bit too long on Joel's tattooed forearm?

Well, the lingering was obviously there for a reason as in the closing minutes of the opener, Lester's character was blown up by an explosives-rigged van leaving Lana scrabbling around in the aftermath only to find the aforementioned forearm.

Mercurio has a track record for shock opening episode deaths, who remembers Georgia (Jessica Raine) being pushed out a window of Line of Duty series two, episode one? And who can forget LoD's Steve Arnott aka Martin Compston being popped off in the opening episode of Vigil last year? So what I'm saying is, there's a bar for shocking and explosive endings when anyone linked to Line of Duty is involved.

There also seems to be a bar set for the overuse of the term 'mate,' a nod to AC-12 butties Kate Fleming (McClure) and Steve Arnott's (Compston) term of endearment, maybe?

That all being said, we didn't see Joel's body, just his arm - there might be hope. All the same, he was really close to that van. We'll just all have to wait a week for the next episode.

So a hell of a cliffhanger for the first episode of Trigger Point, and the viewers seemed to agree, too.

Amy Allen said: "My heart literally just fell out my a**."

Jamie Bolton posted on Twitter: "This programme before bed probably isn’t the smartest move. I jumped a mile on that last explosion."

But Steve Clark said: "There's no way the police would have removed the cordon before checking on that vehicle."

Meanwhile Lindsey Ramskill simply posted: "That ending", alongside a shocked face.

Trigger Point continues on ITV, 9pm, Sunday, January 23 or you can catch-up with episode one on the ITV Hub.
