ITV The Chase contestant loses out on £64,000 in head-to-head after messing up Welsh question

The Chase host Bradley Walsh welcomed contestants Laura, Dave, Seok and John onto Monday's episode of the ITV quiz show. The contestants were testing their wits against Anne 'The Governess' Hegerty in a bid to take home some cash. In some cases, a few contestants wanted to take a bit more.

Two contestants, Laura and Dave, opted for the highest offers in the Head-to-Head round but failed to reach £64,000 and £36,000 respectively. The Chase fans watching the show lost hope for this week's contestants and took to social media to share their thoughts and opinions.

The gameshow started with John, a history student from Norwich, who came back to the table with a respectable £6,000, despite encouragement by Bradley Walsh and teammate Dave to go for the higher offer of £20k in the Head-to-Head round.

Retired pharmacist, Seok, was up next to face the chaser but the pressure got the better of her in the final question of the Head-to-Head round. Admittedly not a football fan, Seok guessed that the Lion of Vienna pub in Bolton was named after Stanley Matthews rather than Nat Lofthouse, which saw the contestant lose her place on the gameshow after The Governess guessed it right.

Dave, a bank manager from Birmingham, was the third contestant to take on the chaser. Feeling optimistic, the contestant revealed that he "had always known what [he] was going to do when [he] got on the show" and aimed for the higher offer of £36,000 in the Head-to-Head round.

But, Dave's optimism was not matched by his success and he stumbled on the second question that perhaps the show's Welsh viewers would've guessed correctly. The question was: "Which of these towns was granted city status in 2012?" The bank manager guessed it was St Neots, which was incorrect, while The Governess got the question right with St Asaph.

In response to getting the answer right, The Governess said: "There are two towns in Wales - St Asaph and St Davids. One of them is the smallest city in the UK and one of them has the smallest cathedral in the UK. Ask me which, I don't have the faintest idea which is which." But, Bradley Walsh was quick to add that he believed St David's was the smallest city in the UK.

The Birmingham contestant also got the following question about the colour of Chinese celadon porcelain wrong. Dave admitted that he regretted his decision and even The Governess expressed her disappointment over the fact the brave contestant was leaving the gameshow too soon.

The Chase fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the incident. On Twitter, Mace Windu, said: "The lesson to be learned is: Don't go high unless you're a proper quizzer." Another Twitter handler, @diddlywiddly, said: "I’m sure the questions are more difficult when contestants go high".

The fourth contestant - Laura from Birkenhead, managed to bank £6,000, and like Dave her head was also turned by a huge offer of £64k in the Head-to-Head round. Laura stumbled in the first question, which asked: "In the early 1890s, who supported William Dickinson in his invention of the Kinetoscope motion-picture projector?"

Laura guessed it was Italian inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, over Nikolai Tesla and Thomas Edison, but the correct answered, as guessed by the chaser, was in fact Thomas Edison. The second question was also a tricky one and asked what was the usual definition using more than one of what in the same sentence in 'code-switching' in linguistical context. The answer was language - which Laura guessed incorrectly, but The Governess knew thanks to her degree in Linguistics.

With Seok, Dave and Laura out of the gameshow, this meant that John was the last contestant standing. But it seemed that the damaged had already been done as three contestants short meant that John only managed to correctly answer 15 questions. Although The Governess had breezed through previous questions in the show, the chaser did stumble upon three in the Final Chase. Despite this, The Governess remained victorious and managed to answer all 15 questions ahead of time, meaning Bradley had to take the money back off the last remaining player.
