ITV Masked Singer's Michael Owen issues apology after show

Former England international footballer Michael Owen was revealed to be Doughnuts on the Masked Singer on Saturday night.

In the double eliminations show with Michael the second celebrity to be unveiled following Firework's exit. .Before the unveiling the judges - Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, Rita Ora as well as guest judge Years & Years' Olly Alexander - were asked to guess who could be behind the mask.

Olly guessed it was Andy Cole, whilst Rita suggested it could be Alan Shearer, the Mirror reports.

Footballer Michael Owen was Jonathan Ross' guess and Davina's was Gary Lineker. Comedian Mo thought it could be Michael Owen behind the mask.

Most said they were surprised by the latest Masked Singer revelation.

Doughnuts made an impression on the judges - despite his singing voice perhaps not have been as impressive as the other celebs behind the mask. He wowed the viewers in the studio and at home with his entertainment value.

It came after the Doughnuts character teased a Nottinghamshire connection, after being filmed at a local visitor attraction - Sundown Adventureland in Retford.

After the show, Michael, who made it to episode six of the popular contest, took to Twitter to issue an apology, M.E.N reports.

He said: "Finally I can apologise for burning your ears these last few weeks.

"My kids badgered me into doing Masked Singer but I have to say it was a great experience and a whole lot of fun.

"Still can’t believe I got past round one!"

Speaking after their exit, the unmasked celeb said: "I surprised myself, I think," as he explained how everyone in the football world would have been so shocked to see him on a show like this.
