ITV Lorraine's Dr Hilary Jones issues 'worrying' warning to anyone that eats bread

Dr Hilary Jones issued a worrying warning to anyone who eats bread.

The medical expert appeared on today's edition of Lorraine after a study revealed a slice of some types of bread contains as much salt in just one slice as a bag of ready salted crisps. Lorraine Kelly fronted her self titled chat show and was alarmed by the findings.

She said: "You think you are taking care of yourself and, if you've got to cut down on salt, you don't expect it to be in a slice of bread." The Scottish presenter was staggered as Dr Hilary confirmed the findings.

He said: "Action on Salt have looked at 242 different loaves, examined them all and three quarters of them had as much salt as a packet of salted of crisps. That's a worry and the worst one is two slices of bread gives you a fifth of your daily total recommended intake of salt."

Dr Hilary explained the dangers of a high salt intake over many years can lead to increased risks of strokes, heart attacks and other forms of heart disease. The expert urged people to cut down on our salt intake.

He said: "We can do that by not putting added salt lt to everything we eat. And processed foods, some pizzas contain more salt per weight than seawater. It's easy if you're buying the wrong stuff to have too much salt."
