ITV journalist bravely carries on after rumble of explosions force him to pause live chat

An ITV journalist was forced to pause his live segment from Ukraine after hearing rumbles of explosion.

The channel's Europe Editor James Mates joined ITV News live from Ukraine's capital of Kyiv to give an update on the current events in the European country - but he had to briefly pause his show after hearing worrying sounds.

As he discussed the Russian army taking control of their first main city, James explained it was a "significant" change.

"It is significant, it's a big loss for the Ukrainians but put it in context, there's been eight days now of all out fighting and this is the first one they've managed to seize," he began.

"They would have expected to control probably most of - I'm sorry," he said as he paused the discussion and looked away from the camera into the distance.

Explaining what happened, he added: "Sorry I'm just pausing, we're hearing a rumble of explosions around us."

However, after a moment, he returned to deliver his segment, as he shared: "They would have expected to have more ground than they do currently, so that is significant. They're now attacking Mariupol and it seems they're moving on to Odessa next.

"If this takes the pressure off Kyiv, the capital, and Kharkiv, that will be a good thing. Although, we are still seeing terrible pictures coming out of Kharkiv. My colleague is heading there later so we will see more pictures of what is happening there."

It comes just days after Good Morning Britain reporter Richard Gaisford was forced to leave Kyiv as clashes worsened in the Ukrainian capital, just hours after he had to take cover during a live broadcast.

"So as a team we've made a really difficult decision that we need to get out of Kyiv because the Russian forces are very close," the overseas correspondent," he said in a video shared online.

"We are really not entirely sure what is going to happen next. So this amazing beautiful city, that has been very much part of our lives over these last few weeks, we're going to bid farewell to. We just wish everyone here the very best of luck."
