Sue Cleaver has been praised by I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here viewers before they realised why she has been exempt from trials. The Coronation Sreet star entered the jungle on Sunday alongside the likes of Boy George, ex-rugby star Mike Tindall, presenter Scarlette Douglas and Hollyoaks' Owen Warner.
But viewers were left wondering why Sue, who is famed for playing Eileen Grimshaw in the ITV soap, was exempt from yet another Bushtucker Trial during Thursday's installment of the ITV reality show.
Before the end of the latest trip to the jungle, hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly revealed that former health secretary Matt Hancock would be facing yet another trial, but this time he is being joined by singer-songwriter Boy George. The pair will take on the first eating challenge of this series in scenes to air on Friday'sshow (November 11).
The Geordie duo said both would be eating at La Cucaracha Cafe, which means the Cockroach cafe in Spanish. It comes after Matt, 44, was voted by the public to take on his second trial, Tentacles of Terror, just 24 hours into his controversial appearance in camp. It saw the West Suffolk MP, who has been suspended from the Tory party, trapped inside an octopus-shaped cage full of underwater critters during the latest episode.
But when revealing the latest bushtucker trial, who had been voted to take part, Ant and Dec revealed Sue was exempt. And it led to questions from I'm A Celeb viewers. @iDanLaurie tweeted: "Why is Sue exempt from an eating trial #ImACeleb confused." @phylsyl wrote: "Why was sue exempt for the eating trial.? The other day 3 were exempt..don't go in if your gonna be exempt from trials very unfair . #ImACeleb."
@Jodielouisej posted: "How is Sue exempt from everything? Like surely you can’t go in the jungle and then dodge all the trials? Come on, Eileen! #ImACeleb." But @AnneDel81230567 shared: "I have noticed diabetic patch on Sue's arm that I have. That is probably why she has been exempt from some of the trials especially the food ones. #ImACeleb."
While an official reason hasn't been given for any of the exemptions so far this year, it is known that Sue has diabetes. In 2011, it was reported that Sue had to be rushed to hospital for treatment after collapsing on the Coronation Street set due to her diabetes. A spokesperson for Coronation Street told Mail Online at the time: “Sue felt ill on set and was taken to hospital as a precaution."
Speaking on This Morning in 2019, Sue told how she had a terrifying scare with sepsis. when she began to show symptoms while on set. She told hosts Eamon Holmes and Ruth Langsford: "I didn’t really take it seriously. I suffer with IBS and I thought I was having a flare-up."
After leaving the set early, she returned the next day only for her symptoms to get worse. "And then I came back in the next morning at 7:30am and was shooting all day. It was the hottest day of the year and I was on set with a hot water bottle, shaking," she explained.
"And my feet were just blue and purple and I had goosebumps on my arms... I went home at lunchtime, I got into bed. I had socks on, leggings on and thinking 'Not only have I got really bad IBS, but I’ve caught the flu now.' However, it was actually a severe kidney infection which had caused the sepsis.
Meanwhile, I'm A Celeb viewers have been praising Sue after spotting the patch, which could be someting used by people who live with diabetes. @eandndiabetes tweeted: "Fab to see @Sue_Cleaver wearing her dexcom #positiverolemodel @imacelebrity." @Ajc03_ commented: "If Sue is diabetic glad that she’s actively showing the glucose monitor & not hiding it away like it’s something to be ashamed of #ImACeleb."
