Good Morning Britain viewers said they were 'genuinely baffled' as Lulu made an appearance on the show. Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray were back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Friday (August 12) when the shortlist for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 host city was revealed.
The big reveal as to who made it to the shortlist was made on BBC Radio 2 on Friday morning (August 12) during Zoe Ball's Breakfast Show with the host and BBC Radio 1's Scott Mills. He revealed the seven cities to have made the cut are: Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield.
The UK has been given the chance to host Eurovision for the ninth time – more than any other country – after the event's organisers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), previously decided the event cannot be held in war-torn Ukraine following the Russian invasion. The UK also finished in second place in the competition back in May after Sam Ryder pulled off a spectacular performance.
Reacting to the new, Charlotte and Adil were joined live on GMB by Lulu, along with 1981 Eurovision winner Cheryl Baker and 1993 runner-up Sonia, onto the show to share their thoughts on the seven cities facing the prospect of hosting the biggest music competition.
When asked who she'd like to host the 2023 final, singer Lulu, who won Eurovision for the UK in 1969 in Madrid, replied: "Errrrrm Glasgow!" while reverting to her Scottish accent whilst speaking live from her home in London.
Adil then asked Lulu what her memories were of taking part in Eurovision back in the day. "Well, of course when I was a child living in Glasgow I remember 'Sing Little Birdy Sing' and it was very exciting but it was a very small event," she said. "Now it is world class this show, it's one of the biggest shows on television. And if you think about it, it's almost an institution because it's lasted so long and it's kind of like on a parallel with James Bond.
"It's exciting. I was very nervous in Madrid when we did it because when you're representing your own country you feel responsible," she added, before saying: "I'm excited now because of Ukraine, this is our chance to represent them and do right by them."
But as they discussed the prospects for the several cities named in the shortlist, GMB viewers were distracted by Lulu's appearance and couldn't believe she is 73. @declanhattie tweeted: "How Lulu is 73 is genuinely baffling. She looks 42 at a push #GMB #Lulu @GMB."
@inkyponk replied: "I know. Even her neck is smooth and wrinkle free and that normally reveals your true age!" @KarenlovesGB commented: "How incredible does Lulu look? Understated stunner #gmb." @Batman3983 joked: "F**king hell I’m 40 and I look older than Lulu #GMB."
