ITV Good Morning Britain's Martin Lewis issues warning to anyone on Universal Credit

Good Morning Britain's Martin Lewis issued a broadband warning to anyone on Universal Credit.

The finance guru hosted today's edition of the ITV news programme alongside Susanna Reid. Martin issued financial advice for the second edition of Wallet Wednesdays.

The new monthly segment will see the 50-year-old offer financial advice to help viewers navigate their way through the cost-of-living crisis. A viewer named Laurie asked for advice after their TalkTalk broadband bill has risen to £27.41.

The viewer was disabled and on benefits so Martin advised them to switch providers as TalkTalk does not offer a social tariff like some competitors do.

He said: "Pretty much everyone's broadband prices have gone up 14%. Not quite everyone but most people. You'll all be seeing that hit now. If you're in contract there's nothing much you can do.

"If you're out of contract you can switch. If you're disabled and on benefits, you would normally be entitled to a social tariff which will cost you between £10 and £20 a month and is a long term cheap tariff.

"Four million people are. Almost all companies offer them, but TalkTalk doesn't. It instead offers free broadband to jobseekers. So you're with one of the few companies that don't have a social tariff. If you're out of contract, I'd switch and move onto their social tariff."

Martin explained most comparison sites don't list social tariffs and urged people to take advantage of this benefit. He said: "There are four million people eligible for social tarriffs. Long term, cheap broadband and only 4% of those four million are getting them right now.

"If you are on Universal Credit or, in some cases, other forms of benefits check out whether you are eligible for a social tariff and how that compares to what you're paying."
