ITV Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid condemns Will Smith Oscars slap incident on show

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid made her thoughts clear about the Oscars slap incident that occurred at The 94th Academy Awards on Sunday night.

Speaking on the ITV show on Monday morning, Susanna was appalled at the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock that took place after Chris made a joke aimed at Will's wife Jada.

As reported by the Mirror, Chris referred to the actress's buzzcut and joked: "Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2."

Will - who went on to win Best Actor later in the evening - walked up to the stage and slapped the presenter, before returning to his seat and yelling: "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth."

The comedian's joke was a reference to the 1997 movie G.I Jane - which starred Demi Moore sporting a buzzcut similar to Jada's.

Jada has spoke out about her decision to shave her hair off, after finding out she suffered from alopecia.

Despite this, Susanna condemned Will Smith's reaction to the situation, saying: "He doesn't merit a slap. It's not okay, sorry, slapping people is not okay."

Playing devil's advocate, fellow host Richard Madeley said: "I'm not justifying what he did but I can see why 50 per cent of our viewers think it's okay. We saw a moment of flawed humanity."

Susanna continued: "Also this point about, 'I was defending her'. Yes if she was being assaulted, I understand, but not over a joke.

"If they condone it and say there was a justification for it, they're saying it's alright that if something says something and then gets hurt, it's okay."

Ranvir Singh also chimed in, saying that she hoped her son didn't see the footage of the assault as it was played on the morning programme.

Susanna added: "I don't think it was the alopecia that made Will do it", as Will Smith was shown laughing at the joke before his outburst.

ITV's Good Morning Britain resumes each weekday from 6am onwards on the channel.
