Emmerdale's newest character may be 'too good to be true' if the actor who plays Nicky is anything to go by. Lewis Cope is set to make his debut in the ITV soap as the new nanny at Home Farm. In upcoming scenes, viewers will see Gabby Thomas and Dawn Taylor interviewing candidates to look after their children while they work for Kim Tate.
The pair appear set to go head to head for Kim's affections when it comes to business and so they need all the time they can get. And in true Kim Tate-style, the nanny interviews at Home Farm are a formal affair but despite Billy’s reassurance, Dawn’s still uncomfortable with someone else looking after their kids.
They still press on with the interviews and after a couple of candidates don't quite fit Dawn, Gabby and Kim's bill, the competition for Home Farm's nanny gets hotter when both Dawn and Gabby are both impressed with Nicky – a handsome male nanny. When another candidate, Samantha declines the job, Gabby’s delighted to offer it to Nicky.
He accepts and agrees to meet the children - Gabby's son Thomas, Dawn's son Lucas and Clemmie who she and husband Billy have since taken in. Whilst Kim and Gabby are excited for this new chapter, Dawn still needs a little convincing about having a nanny but seeing Nicky make an instant connection with Clemmie, Dawn's worries subside and she offers him the job.
Speaking for the first time about his new role and the character, Lewis told the Manchester Evening News and other press: "Nicky's a great character. He's very relatable, likeable, and I'm just having fun with him."
When asked if Nicky had any dark secrets, the new soap star teased: "At the moment he's a lovely person, and there's nothing to say [otherwise].... he kind of fits the bill. He is almost too good to be true though, but we'll have to wait and see." And as for if he has links to anyone else in the village that may come out later down the line, Lewis replied: "Nothing has come through yet... but it's a soap."
Emmerdale's executive producer Jane Hudson also spoke about Nicky's arrival and what that means. "I think this is the first time Home Farm has had a nanny," she said. "He's a very good-looking nanny who catches the eye of Gabby the minute he walks in. There's lots of fun in store for Nicky and Gabby as we watch their fledgling romance and like any good story, there will be a few reveals along the way."
Lewis also gave viewers and insight into his character's background and what made him Nicky the ideal candidate for the job. "When Nicky was 16 his mam passed away, and he's the oldest of six - and he's basically looked after the kids since they were growing up," Lewis shared. "So he had a lot of experience with kids, and that's what got him into nannying.
"But I think not everyone was on board in the interview [at Home Farm], because Dawn obviously has a big problem with leaving the kids, so I think she was very particular on the type of person she wanted; she was the hardest to win over." Chatting with Gabby co-star Rosie Bentham, she shared how Nicky has experience in child psychology which ticks another box for them due to Clemmie's difficult past.
